Mississauga, November 2, 2025 - Michael J. Molloy, a
retired Canadian foreign service officer and a co-author of the
book, Hearts of Freedom: Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees,
attended a book launch and film screening at the Burnhamthorpe
Library.
Molloy, who coordinated Canada's resettlement of 60,000
Indochinese refugees in 1979-80, spoke at the event. He detailed
the origins of the multi-year
Hearts of Freedom project, which
is based on over 145 oral histories collected from former
refugees and the Canadians who assisted them.
The presentation and the accompanying documentary,
Passage to Freedom, highlighted
the harrowing experiences of Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian
refugees who fled persecution, war, and genocide to escape to
Canada, primarily between 1975 and 1985.
